Free Pattern – Little Kitty Fleece Hat

November 19, 2012

I’m in the midst of another holiday sewing frenzy. Last year I made snow pants (for the kids and myself), fleece pullovers, crocheted beanies and gloves and knitted scarves (for the whole family!). Unfortunately, some pieces went missing, and the rest don’t quite fit anymore because the kids have grown! So this year I’m looking for quick and simple projects, that will not break my heart when they go missing in the snow.

The first thing I had to make was simple fleece jackets to act as linings inside their new ski jackets. I bought ski jacket+snow pants sets from Rakuten this year. At less than 4000yen for one set it didn’t make sense for me to make the snow pants myself. Then I ordered some fleece from fabric.com at US$4.98/yard. Fleece lining jackets are available here at outdoor sports shops, but they are waaaay overpriced.  I drew my own patterns for the jackets and I’m in the middle of taking photos of the steps, hopefully there will be a sew-along soon. 🙂

Then my hubby reminded me this morning that he wanted to buy a new beanie, I offered to sew one for him but he politely declined. I then decided to look for a fleece beanie pattern for my little girls and this is what I found!

It’s from a website called Kimidori Lab and the hat is called a みみ&みみ帽 which says “Mimi & Mimi hat”. The name itself is cute isn’t it? Anyway, I had leftover fleece after making 2 jackets and the fleece is almost the same color as this one!

The pattern is located below the description. You can select a4 size to print or A3 size (if you have a A3 printer). Choosing the former will require you to cut and paste (see below).

The unfortunate thing is, there are no detailed instructions. So I did a quick translation of the important points from the pattern pieces.

You will get 3 pieces of A4 size paper. You can tell which part of the pattern it is by the little diagram on the top of each page. Notice the light green lines on the bottom right of the example page above? When you cut the pieces these lines will overlap with the next piece, so these are actually the joining guides for sticking the pieces together.

The other important thing to note is that if you are using one piece of fabric, you have to cut on fold from the first line in purple (i.e. without seam allowance). If you are using 2, cut both with the seam allowance included.

The size fits a child with a head circumference of 50-54cm. I forgot to check the lengths of the flaps before cutting. Turns out that it is too short for my girl so I can’t use the button method. So I either have to sew on some straps, or maybe add an extra flap with velcro to catch the other side. Anyway, I haven’t been able to get it off her yet. It’s now part of her kitty cat costume. Will have to finish it up later.

The pattern comes with alternative bear ears (rounded instead of pointy) which my older girl has requested for in pink fleece. So that will be the next hat and I will be sure to lengthen the flaps before cutting out the fabric this time.

The above pattern is no longer available on the website link. But I have found a similar pattern and blogged about it here –  Free fleece hat pattern from Pandora House

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that I felt in love with this kitty hat and was so sad it wasn’t available anymore, I re-developed a quite similar pattern, I’ve put the pattern and tutorial for free on my blog, they’re both translated in English and I’ve graded it for multiple sizes.
