New Releases – July 2015

July 20, 2015

Half the year has gone by and we are now more than halfway into the month of July. Sorry for not posting last week as there was just too much going on at home to get anything done. The good news is that I have already taken photos for the books I bought recently and they should be ready for review soon! In the meantime, here are the recent releases spotted online for your shopping pleasure 🙂

check&stripe

The first book is by Check & Stripe and is a collection of designs for clothes and small accessories by 7 different designers. You can see the full list of designers and detailed lessons by each of them, as well as the sizing information for the projects from the Check & Stripe website. (images from Check & Stripe)

handmadeskirts

I love the cover of this book! As you can see from the cover, this is a hand sewing book for 5 types of hand-sewing skirt.  There are no patterns included but there are instructions for customizing the patterns to your own size. See more details here

usako

A few years ago when I was blogging for free Japanese sewing patterns online I came across this website http://yousai.net/ There are lots of free downloadable patterns, especially (but not limited to) cosplay costumes. There is even a youtube channel  with lots of helpful instructional videos. You can check out some of her videos on basic sewing techniques. This book is titled Usako’s Handmade Steampunk and Classical Dress. For more book details click here.

Now for the periodicals

cottontimejul15

Cotton Time July 2015 – includes 67 projects. Main highlights – Summer handmade items you can make in a short time. Included in the magazine – a free piece of the patchwork fabric as seen on the bag on the cover. Note that the fabric is usually quite a small piece, just a sample size and slightly smaller than the magazine. There will be projects showing you how to use this free fabric.

ladyboutiqueaug15

Lady boutique Aug 2015
Main headline – Weekend Sewing

That’s all for this month’s new releases. Will run along to work on those book reviews now. I will also be posting a poll soon on both the blog as well as Facebook, to get some feedback on the types of Japanese sewing books you want to see being translated. So do watch out for that too, as you will get a chance to be heard by some very important decision making persons who may make your wish come true!

The Lady Boutique issue looks intriguing. I wish there were some inside images on Amazon. The Edwardian steampunk dress is terrific; not my thing, but pretty anyway! Thanks!

ooooh could u pretty please translate the pattern for the bag on front of cotton time July ?? I have the magazine but new to bag making, not sure what to use to make the bag structured like it is

I’m excited about the poll and the prospect of more Japanese sewing books getting translated!

I have not purchased the magazine yet. Still wondering if I should 🙂
The structure of the bag is due to the type of interfacing used. Usually for bags that need to hold its shape you have to sew in a heavy weight interfacing. If you are new to interfacing here’s an example of what it looks like in one of my tutorials

      Refer to point number 10.

A piggy back comment: can you please review the Check & Stripe book? It seems intriguing, never heard about this company before. Thanks in advance!
