Book Review – More! Handmade Wallets

September 28, 2012

Hot off the press! This book is kind of a “sequel” to an earlier book called  ハンドメイドのお財布 . The book is appropriately titled : もっと!ハンドメイドのお財布 which means “More! Handmade wallets”.  I just saw this book listed a few weeks ago and decided I liked the cover of the newer book better 🙂 I’m also assuming the patterns or designs will be more up to date? I didn’t buy the first book, but it was on my wish list for a long time. I made a couple of wallets before and I never managed to do it very nicely, so hopefully this book will teach me the proper way to construct a wallet, especially all the inner pockets!

It was actually the fabric, the lovely colors of the fabric of the wallet on the cover that made me buy the book. How superficial am I? 😛

A peep into the contents… page 1. Mainly long wallets in different variations. Box-type, L shape, W-zip, Accordian type

Page 2. Mini wallets, Multi-case, Wrist-purse, Macaron Case

This is the wallet featured on the cover, and this is the Box-type, which is probably referring to the way the coins are held in a box-compartment instead of a zippered compartment. I’m not sure how feasible this is, but I suppose if you can open it up this way it makes it easier to see and pick out the coins you need? Or will it be easier for everything to fall out instead?

I need to hunt down the fabrics she used for the book! I love this fabric too! This is the L-shape fastener type long wallet.

Full of slots and compartments. Coins go in the pocket right in the middle.

W-fastener type. I think it just means that i opens up like a W (from side profile) and the top is closed by a zip.

Accordian type. Looks complicated but I’m probably attempting this one (minus the handles) because I always like a challenge ;P

Add detachable straps and it becomes a shoulder bag. Smart!

The book also includes patterns for Mini-wallets. Great for kids!

Coin pocket is located at the back of the mini-wallet. So there is less chance of them dropping their cards and notes because they don’t have to keep opening the inner compartments to access the coins.

My little one decided that this is the one for her. She has already placed her order.

Multi-purpose organizer. Great for travelling!

Other than wallets, there are a few cute projects included at the end of the book.

Super cute little wrist pouch!

Learn how to make the popular macaron cases, and get inspired by a whole collection of ideas! This is just one of the many included. It’s a weave pattern using cloth strips. I can imagine it will be rather tedious, but it looks very pretty!

Moving into the how-to-make section, there is an introduction on the materials needed. There are also tips on fabrics to use, fabrics to avoid, the tools needed, as well as the different types of interfacing. All the wallets require interfacing, some even use all three types in one project – light, medium and heavyweight.

There are a few lessons that follow through the construction of the wallets from beginning to end, using a combination of diagrams and photos. Very clear and concise, and they use different fabrics for the different pockets/layers so it’s easy to distinguish even without translation help trying to identify which piece goes where. The rest of the projects are variations on these same techniques, so these lessons will provide all the help you need for all the projects.

Some more basic techniques before you begin. How to make your own bias-tape, hand-stitching and piping.

For each of the project’s how-to-make, the instructions are provided in diagrams like the one above.

The book comes with one sheet of pattern paper.

Publication date : 7th October 2012! Of course, the books are usually available way before that. I actually ordered it about 2 weeks ago and it just arrived, so I suppose it should be available already on some of the online stores.

[…] Another revised book which seems to be an updated (I see some new designs) + combination (I see designs from both books) of the two handmade wallet books (see below). The description on the publisher’s website says it contains popular works as well as new designs. Now you only need one book, instead of 2. Luckily, I only bought one (read review here) […]
